Tough Mudder

Greetings all!  Got back late yesterday from being up in Whistler.  Brent competed in the Tough Mudder race with some friends from work.

A bunch of his family also came up from Edmonton and competed as well (but were on a different team).

Have you heard about it? Done it? Know someone that’s done it?

Apparently, they are popping up all over the place in the US and Canada.  Basically its a huge obstacle course (around 20 obstacles) with a half marathon thrown in.  I’m totally wishing I could have done it!  Next year for sure.  It looks like a TON of fun.  There is one in Calgary in July and another in Whistler again in August.  My hubby LOVED it and definitely wants to do more.

Unfortunately, due to my pregnancy pelvis issues, I wasn’t even able to watch this time around.  It was a long walk (like 1-2 km) from the shuttles to the finish line, which would’ve been too far for me to waddle in pain.

Thankfully one of the other team members wives took my camera and snapped some pics!

Brent and one of his teammates…(hubby is in the grey shorts)

A view of one of the obstacles (crawling under barbwire)

Another obstacle right near the end…running through live wires (some of them were live, some weren’t)

His team…all done! Tired, but they all completed it!

Brent said it was pretty much as he expected.  He liked it much better than doing his triathlon, liked how it was more team based (you helped your team get through all the obstacles).  There were some part he said that were tough (like jumping in the icy cold lake), but much of it was mental and pushing yourself to do it.  The cardio portion wasn’t as intense as he expected, probably because it was a lot of stop and go, plus making sure the team stayed together.

I’ll be doing it next year….who’s else is in???!!!! 🙂

Just saw this post. My husband and I did the mudder in Whistler too. Loved it. In fact, we are headed to the Seattle mudder at the end of September. I didn’t realize that you were so close. We live in Victoria. Floow your blog, but didn’t realize you were so nearby. 🙂

Oh cool! Yes, I’m a local! Haha. I know a few people doing the Seattle one too! My hubby would have maybe wanted to do that one, but its right after our new baby will be here so no go! 🙂 Would love to hear what you think of it compared to Whistler! Kristine Fretwell, Busy But Healthy,

    Hi Christine,
Thanks for lending me your camera! One of our kids dropped our and didn’t get one in time for the event.  Your husband was real instrumental in my hubby’s training (picture above, Matt’s on the left)! So thank you Brent! I know you would have been there but you were right the stretch was long and I myself was struggling just to get to the spectators arena being 3 months pregnant with our 5th!
I’m so proud of my husband, just like you! I was surprised to see so many woman doing it! I was at the finish line waiting to shoot photos of the group, for about 2 hours. I was amazed to see so many amazing things, like a man on dialysis complete the race! Another story of a woman who completed it in honor of her husband who died a month before! A group carrying an injured team member up the final stretch! It was all about team work!

Nice to meet you Frances and thanks again for taking the camera! I can’t believe you’ve already had 4 kids…you look amazing!  I told Brent I thought it was your first child!  I know, I heard about those amazing stories later today! Crazy!  So inspiring!!!

I heard of a ton of people on my Facebook doing the Tough Mudder but haven’t really heard about it before…sounds intense! I am crap at team things because I get so psyched out not wanting to hold other people up. otherwise I might give it a go. But a half-marathon – I doubt I could run that distance with my knee. As a team is it a relay or does everyone have to complete the half marathon individually? Congrats to your hubby though, it sure looks like a fun time!

I think you’d like it…you don’t really care about your time, you just want to get through, and you’re meeting people along the way and a stranger would help you up a wall!  The whole team does everything…its not a relay.  Brent didn’t find the cardio bad at all….he rarely found himself breathing hard.  Its very stop and go, the farthest you run in one stint is usually 1-2km.
